Poetic Documentary

A poetic documentary is when footage is arranged in an order to evoke an audience using tone or rhythm.  Ron Fricke's Samsara is a good example of this. https://vimeo.com/46273869 In this documentary the beat of the music matches whats happening in the video, without being related.

Expository Documentary

An expository documentary builds a specific argument or a point of view for the audience. Usually, the dialogue used is a authoritative voice (like Morgan Freeman in March of the Penguins) this voice helps people believe the facts more.

Observational Documentary

An observational documentary is where a filmmaker is observing truth by letting the camera capture its subjects without being interrupted.  A good example of this is the documentary War photographer by James Nachtwey. Whatever is happening is captured naturally, as if the camera wasn't there.

Participatory Documentary

The participatory documentary invites the people in the documentary to participate with the filmmaker, usually by being interviewed. An example of a participatory documentary is the film, The Thin Blue Line by Errol Morris.

Reflexive Documentary

In a reflexive documentary, the film maker acknowledges their presence in front of the camera and provides a narrative to the documentary.Louis Theroux is a good example of a film maker who makes reflexive documentaries. He is known for his controversial method of reflexive film making, as he is in front of the camera and is a casual interviewer.

Performative documentary

Performative documentaries are where the film maker takes part in the documentary as the main subject who is trying something out for an experiment. They are part of the filming, as well as being the documentary maker.  Being pretty personal, it gives the audience a sense of emotion and understanding, as they can watch first hand what its like, as the film maker is doing it. These documentaries offer a chance to air unique perspectives without having to argue both sides of their experiences. There is more space for creative freedom like narration, ect.
